THANK goodness a sense of patriotic duty prevailed last night when the SPL and Setanta granted Alex McLeish's request to postpone the Old Firm's fixtures before Scotland's clash with Italy on November 17.

McLeish, anxious to avoid a repeat of last week's outing to Georgia when his squad was depleted by injury, placed his cards on the table early and it would have been unthinkable if the SPL or their TV paymasters had refused his wish.
