A misprint, surely? NOPE. It's a word derived from the merging of two nouns that many have long suspected belong together - banker and gangster.

You just made that up 'Fraid not. The term bankster surfaced in the 1930s in the aftermath of the stock market crash which wiped out millions of small investors.
