Summary
ON a day void of football in England, you might have thought that the only Premiership show around, of the Guinness variety, would have been given rather more air time on Radio 5 Live than usual. How naive can you be? Instead, the soccer obsession at the station demanded that they rise to the occasion by devoting the vast majority of its time last Saturday afternoon to Scottish Premier League football, kicking off with Rangers-Celtic which is, I will readily concede, a big game in anyone's language. Fair enough but they then got terribly excited about the matches which followed at Aberdeen, Hibernian, Dundee United, Motherwell and St Mirren.
Yes, they did justice to Harlequins' Twickenham extravaganza but score updates around the country were in short supply. If 5 Live could despatch a reporter to St Mirren (attendance 4,794), then why not send one to a fixture which war correspondents would occasionally cover during peace time merely to keep their hand in, Bristol v Gloucester (attendance 11, 845)? For the record, gates at the six Scottish League football games last Saturday averaged 16,305 compared to 19,127 for the five rugby matches.See the full content of this document
