BRITAIN'S long wait for one of our women to win a singles tennis match at the U.S. Open finally ended last night when Anne Keothavong made it through to the second round. Not since Samantha Smith in 1997 has anyone playing under the Union Flag troubled the scorers at Flushing Meadows but that abysmal sequence was laid to rest by the 24-year-old from Hackney.
Keothavong, Britain's first player in the top 100 since Smith, comprehensively defeated American qualifier Alexa Glatch 6-2 6-2 and now faces the more daunting task of taking on Italy's No 25 seed Francesca Schiavone. Her victory is a modest gain, but indicative nonetheless of the gradual improvement in British women's tennis that has been seen this year with Keothavong, the world No 87, in the vanguard.See the full content of this document
