THE week the public mood turned decisively against Bertie Ahern's acceptance of half a dozen unexplained secret payments, and the day before he takes to the stand for the most extraordinary cross- examination of a sitting Taoiseach in the history of the State, the Standards in Public Office Commission decides not to launch an investigation into his finances.

To reach this bizarre decision, the commission has had to overlook evasions, contradictions, delaying tactics, outright implausibilites, and a long list of grave problems with Mr Ahern's explanation of his finances. It is an extraordinary judgment to have made. The commission's own purpose is surely now in question.
