A SHORTAGE of coastguards following cutbacks coincided with an alarming rise in deaths on the British coastline, an MPs' report has revealed.

The Commons transport committee found the death toll had shot up by 28.1 per cent to 319 between 1998 and 2002, while accidents were up 17.3 per cent.
