I WAS sorry to see prominence given to the claim that learning a second language can help ward off Alzheimer's disease. Sadly, there's no more truth in this claim than the old idea that aluminium causes the disease or that if you kept your mind active, you wouldn't get it.

We all know that some of the best brains in the country have succumbed to it. Indeed, it often seems that the less brainy fare best.
