FOR 25 years, Alistair Darling has been a friend and confidant to Gordon Brown. So when Mr Brown finally became Prime Minister, his old friend from Scotland appeared to be a safe choice as Chancellor.

But, as Mr Brown flew to the United States still refusing to apologise for his role in the credit crunch, Mr Darling (pictured) gave an interview calling for the Government to accept collective responsibility for its mistakes.
