EVER since Ron Delany won the 1,500 metres gold medal at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Irish people have had a certain fascination about the event and the success associated with it.

Eamonn Coghlan was seen as most unlucky not to get a medal in the event in the '76 Games in Montreal but that only strengthened the affiliation and interest which the Irish have with the distance. Coghlan never did get to run the 1,500m at the World Championships but had his glorious golden moment in the 5,000m at their inaugural event in Helsinki in 1983.
