AS AN immigration officer, I'm encouraged by those who offer the hand of friendship to asylum seekers (Letters).

However, to claim asylum, a person must be on the UK mainland. It's impossible to gain entry to the UK by claiming asylum, so those who are here doing so must have used some sort of verbal or documentary deception or employed the services of criminal gangs to get here. What is to say they will not continue to deceive to stay here? A huge number of asylum applications have no validity: an enormous effort is required to sort out the valid applications from the vastly more numerous spurious ones and this is the root cause of the problems.
