IRISH athletics emerged as the big winner when it landed a whopping E1.3 million cheque the only federation to receive in excess of seven figures from the Irish Sports Council. The sport topped the list of grants for 2008, with 57 federations benefiting from a total pool of over EUR 11m.
John Treacy, chief executive of the Sports Council, gave a clear indication of how much the grants have increased since they were established in 1999. In that time, our budget has increased and we are now able to significantly increase investment in sport to some EUR 12m and if more monies become available, the governing bodies will be our priority, he said.See the full content of this document
