WHAT an unprecedented display of unity. Britain's big banks, the Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Services Authority are jointly taking a test case on current account charges to the High Court. This is an attempt to determine once and for all what would be a fair price to charge for unauthorised overdrafts.

The harmony will end there. It looks set to be a two-year battle, exposing some of the less desirable practices of our high street lenders, that may well descend into mudslinging all round.
