FAR too many patients are being sent home early from hospital, sometimes with tragic results. From my experience as a doctor in the NHS, I have no doubt that people are often discharged without enough backup at home to help them recover properly.

The system is geared up to be a conveyor belt. And with fewer and fewer beds available and the drive to cut soaring waiting lists, it is obvious that many doctors will feel the pressure to discharge patients sooner than they might otherwise.
