FEELING drained is the most common symptom of iron deficiency anaemia. You might also look pale, and even be losing hair. It is caused by a lack of haemoglobin -- a blood pigment which carries oxygen to the tissues. Heavy blood loss through menstruation is a common cause.

The best source of iron is red meat. You don't need to buy expensive steak: cheaper cuts such as brisket can be just as nutritious (braise slowly with root vegetables). Lean mince beef is a good option.
