When a group of seriousminded scholars founded Cambridge University back in the early 13th century, it seems a reasonable guess that they didn't regard its humble beginnings as a laughing matter. Over the past 800 years, of course, Cambridge has sealed its reputation for being one of the finest universities in the world.

But what those visionary medieval academics could never have guessed at the dawning of this institution was that, one day, it would be known to most not for the scientists, theologians or classicists, but for the comedians who would go on to make the outside world laugh.
