HE WAS Britain's favourite -- and biggest -- carp, but now Benson is more likely to be found stuffed and mounted on someone's sideboard. The monster of Kingfisher Lake, in Tansor near Peterborough, met his untimely demise last week when he was poisoned by toxic bait. All very fishy. Whoever did it has denied scores of anglers the chance to catch Benson, who was only about 20 years old and could have had another happy decade of being caught and thrown back in every few months.

Having arrived at the lake as a tiddler in 1995, he didn't stop eating until he topped the scales at a whopping 67lb 11oz. Over the years, however, he's proved to be something of a yo-yo dieter, with his weight fluctuating by as much as 18lb.
