DARREN BENT travelled up to Wearside last night to discuss personal terms with Sunderland after they finally reached agreement with Tottenham over his move to the Stadium of Light. The breakthrough came after Sunderland improved their Pounds 14m offer which included a Pounds 9m down-payment plus add-ons. The new bid satisfied Tottenham's Pounds 15m demand for the striker, which had already been matched by Stoke.

It is good news for Sunderland boss Steve Bruce and for Bent, who was fined Pounds 120,000 by Spurs last week and forced to issue an apology for using his Twitter page to vent his frustration at club chairman Daniel Levy over the hold-up in talks. Bruce had threatened to pull the plug on the move over the weekend, claiming he twice thought a deal had been agreed.
