QUESTIONI know that the British army heavily drafted Gurkhas in Nepal, but what is known of this recruitment process? GURKHAS take their name from the eighth-century Hindu warriorsaint Guru Gorakhnath.

In 1814, border tensions and the desire of the East India Company to expand its operations into Nepal led to Britain going to war against that mountain kingdom. British officers, mostly working for the company, were impressed by the fighting qualities and tenacity of the enemy soldiers.

The two-year war ended in 1816 with the Treaty of Sugauli, which enshrined the right of the East India Company to recruit Nepalese Gurkha soldiers into its army.
