WHO wants to be a billionaire? Broker Collins Stewart Tullett's market value topped Pounds 1bn as the shares climbed 203/4p to 4851/ 4p, capping five years of growth for the group, where chief executive Terry Smith led a buyout in May 2000 for Pounds 122m, most of it borrowed.

Collins was then a niche stockbroker. Smith, who made his name as an analyst by exposing accounting tricks, led it into moneybroking, acquiring first Tullett for Pounds 250m and then Prebon for Pounds 70m.
