Summary
THE unelected judges of the European Court of Justice (ECJ), will be the final arbiters of the provisions of the Treaty of Lisbon and Charter of Fundamental Rights incorporated therein.
Justice George Arestis of the ECJ has stated: 'The incorporation of the EU charter into the primary constitutional law of the EU will have an impact on the member states, bound by the charter through the doctrine of supremacy of EU law.' Justice Vassilios Skouris, as President of the ECJ, refused to confirm that the Charter would not change national laws.
