ANGIE BEST'S pale blue eyes are red-rimmed from crying and weary from jet lag. Within two hours of arriving at Heathrow airport from her home in Los Angeles, she was at the hospital bedside of her former husband, George Best.

Not only that, but - true to form - there was another blonde already at George's bedside, his current girlfriend Ros Hollidge.

She must have been thrilled to see glamorous Angie sweep in like a Hollywood star to steal her thunder - on the very day George regained consciousness and ate his first meal, a sorbet, no less. Indeed, hospital visitors report hearing a stunned Ros muttering in disbelief as she left: 'I can't believe she turned up just 15 minutes after me!' Still, somehow they managed to exchange pleasantries over the beeping heart monitor in the intensive care room at the private Cromwell Hospital in West London, as George lay between them and Angie wept over the state he was in.
