THANKS to the unforgivable self-indulgence and narcissism of Tony Blair, the past six weeks have been a meaningless and wasted period in British public life. The vacuum at the centre of power means that urgent problems are no longer being addressed the most important being the crisis in the NHS.

Sadly, David Cameron has failed to fill this vacuum, while Gordon Brown has gone quiet. All credit then to Labour backbencher Frank Field, who this week marshalled his forces and seized centre stage with a superbly researched paper on the deep, permanent and devastating damage that the tax system inflicts on family life.
