Is Breastmilk Always the Winning Formula? ; Debate

Summary

Thank goodness doctors have woken up to the fact that enforcing breastfeeding is damaging babies (Mail). I have nothing against breastfeeding -- both my children were breastfed. But a close friend of mine recently gave birth and was told she should breastfeed. She asked for advice on formula milk, but was told it was not an option. Apparently, her midwife was not allowed to promote anything but breast milk. As a result, the baby lost weight as the mother's milk didn't come in and my friend was simply told to persevere. After almost two weeks, the midwife said the baby would have to go into hospital if he did not start putting on weight, so his mum put him on formula milk and within a few days he regained his birth weight.

I agree breast probably is best -- but mothers who cannot or choose not to breastfeed should not be demonised by health professionals.
