Briatore Key to Race-Fix Probe ; World of Sport [Edition 3]

Summary

A MEETING between three conspirators, including Renault's millionaire boss Flavio Briatore, has emerged as the key evidence in the Formula One race-fixing scandal. The FIA are investigating an allegation that Renault asked one of their drivers, Nelson Piquet Jnr, to crash his car at an early stage of last September's Singapore Grand Prix - something he did on lap 14 -- to help the team's other driver Fernando Alonso win. Sources close to the inquiry have suggested that the idea was discussed on the day of the grand prix.

It is alleged Briatore, Renault's team principal, spoke with director of engineering Pat Symonds and Piquet Jnr and race tactics were discussed. The case will be decided by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council on September 21.
