Summary

WHAT would you lead against South's 3NT (bid directly 1NT-3NT)? NO helpful Stayman sequence this time. You have two realistic choices - a heart or club. It is normal to lead your longest suit against No Trumps, so 4 cannot be wrong, and you might hit the jackpot. However, I'd prefer Q because it is safer, and you are starting to establish winners.

With partner marked as having up to 10HCPs, there's always a chance of defeating 3NT if you make the most of your advantage in having the lead. If your clubs had been slightly stronger, say with J or 10 instead of a small one, it would still be marginally better to lead a heart. The sound principle is that, when you can avoid the risk of conceding a trick on the lead, you should take it.
