WHAT is a safety play? And why is it so important? You are playing 3NT from West here, and North leads 6 on which South plays J. How do you plan? YOU can see a certain seven tricks, with the prospect of making three further diamonds and at least one spade. So you win the Q and immediately run the diamond suit, followed by a spade from dummy.

On a good day, you'll end up with twelve tricks and on a bad day, you'll go down because one opponent holds four diamonds.
