Summary

HAVING dealt and opened 1 , your partner responds 1 . What would you rebid on the above hand? YOU have a 19- point hand and hold partner's A-Q, although at this stage you don't know whether he has better than a four-card suit and a minimum of five or six points or nearer the values for a forcing response (16 points). In fact, all you know is that he has enough to respond at the one-level and has biddable spades.

Even if he is minimum, you want to force him to speak again, which you wouldn't do by raising spades or risking no- trumps with that diamond shortage. Bid a new suit at the three- level, that is, bid 3 . Partner must now speak again. He might find delayed support for hearts, rebid his spades or show a diamond stop by the appropriate rebid in no-trumps. Whichever he does, you will have your chance to bid to the best game contract.
