WHAT would you bid next on this South hand? IF YOU chose to bid 3NT, you score only two out of ten for the decision, but you still get an average result, because more than half the field played this hand in 3NT, making an easy ten tricks. The only reasonable explanation for this is that those who play only duplicate are conditioned to spurning minor suit games in favour of the higher- scoring tricks in No Trumps. Certainly, the hand has game values with the unbid suit strongly guarded; but it also has a singleton, two aces and good four-card support for partner's first suit -- all the ingredients for a potential slam. In fact, partner needs as few as 11HCPs in the right places for a grand slam to be a near certainly -- something like:.
