EAST opens the bidding with 1 but South has bought the contract in 4 . You West lead the 9 and East wins with the Q and K, after which he plays the A which declarer ruffs with the J.

What should you do and why? THE automatic reaction of learners and even average players is to over- ruff with the K. But stop to think for a moment. From his play of the J you have cause to hope that East holds the 10, and at any rate nothing is lost by hoping - you will always win with your K.
