SYDNEY defied predictions of a gloomy 2009 with its biggest-ever New Year party and fireworks display last night.

An estimated 1.5million revellers watched the Australian city's EUR 1.75million celebrations, in which 120,000 firework shells and shooting comets were launched from barges, waterfront buildings and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
