ENGLAND'S rusty bowlers were subjected to a torrid ordeal in Brisbane as they began their Ashes defence this morning.

After Australia captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat, openers Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden punished a succession of loose balls to go past 50 in 11 overs. The first ball from Steve Harmison was a wide and the Durham paceman was hauled off after two overs costing 17.
