ON an average day, they spend 20 hours out of 24 inside a bomb shelter on a kibbutz in Israel. They try to watch TV, but the sound is often drowned out by the rat-tat-tat of gunfire and the roar of rockets. By now, the children's ears are well enough attuned to the noise of battle to tell whether the artillery is 'theirs' or 'ours'.

But sometimes their mother Fiona insists that particularly loud bangs were caused by 'our' troops rather than the enemy, even when it's not true. She doesn't want to alarm them any more than necessary.

Her mobile phone, meanwhile, remains in the one area of the shelter where she can get a signal in case her own parents call. Back home in Perth, Mima Walker can hear the booms and rattles of warfare in the background when she speaks to her daughter on the phone.

A few days ago, one Katyusha rocket flew over from Lebanon and blew 12 Israeli soldiers to pieces. Mrs Walker's daughter and three grandchildren were less than 200 yards away.
