INTERNATIONAL bank Standard Chartered surprised the City with its highest ever trading profit up 22pc at $1.54bn (Pounds 810m) despite the impact of Sars on its Asian business.
Chief executive Mervyn Davies called them 'very strong numbers'. He said: 'Not only did we improve returns on equities, but all parts of the business performed well.'
