THEY used to say that cocaine was natures way of telling you that you had too much money. Well, when it comes to the more spectacular excesses of an affluent society, there are several which demonstrate to my complete satisfaction that the world is rapidly going mad.

Some examples you just hear about or see written up in the colour supplements. Others suddenly invade your world. This was my experience of the water menu. Now, I have known for some time that there are restaurants in New York and, I seem to remember, Tokyo where they have sommeliers for water. But these two cities are, anyway, among the weirdest in the world.
