THE extent to which surgical instruments are routinely reused in the NHS was revealed yesterday after a surgeon was cleared of misconduct for doing just that.

Simon Moyes, an orthopaedic specialist, was accused of putting patients at risk of infections by reusing monitoring probes ahead of shoulder operations that should have been thrown away.
