CONSUMER confidence has dropped again to a record low, spurred by a combination of rising interest rates, falling house prices and the prospect of painful Government cutbacks.

The latest IIB Bank/ESRI monthly Consumer Sentiment Index reveals that confidence dropped in July for the sixth month in a row to its lowest point since the index began in 1996.
