REMEMBER that episode of Father Ted, where the parish priest and his sidekick Fr Dougal stood outside the cinema in Craggy Island in protest at a mucky movie being shown inside, carrying placards proclaiming: 'Down with that sort of thing.'? Well, it flashed before me again when I read the self-serving statement from the Cork players last week as they attempted to justify their position for holding a gun to hurling's head one more time.

Last year, they were out in support because their footballers didn't want to play under Teddy Holland; this year they are out because they don't want to play under Gerald McCarthy. Their reason? Apparently, they do not believe that McCarthy's coaching methods are up to the mark. I say 'apparently' because though this would appear to be the core issue in their 3,000-word-plus statement, I didn't see any specific references to exactly where coaching-wise McCarthy had fallen down.
