Summary

THE last time there was league football in Burton, the death of Queen Victoria and the end of the Boer War were fresh in the memory, women had 11 years to wait for the vote and the town which called itself the 'beer capital of the world' had 40 breweries rather than today's handful. After a 102-year gap, Burton Albion's first home game of their first season in the league -- the town's three previous members were Burton Swifts, Wanderers and United -- should surely have prompted a major surge in support for a club so impressively led towards the Conference title by Nigel Clough before his move to Derby last season.

The capacity of Albion's smart new Pirelli Stadium had been increased to just under 7,000 to reflect the rise in seniority. But a stark fact of life was evident as Paul Peschisolido's squad ran out easy 5-2 winners against Morecambe. Simply, Burton upon Trent is very much Derby County territory.
