Summary
WHEN a group of young mothers decided to set up a book club back in 1965, they could never have dreamed that their meetings would still be going strong 40 years later. But they are - and last week our July Book Club Of The Month celebrated an astounding four decades of reading together with a special garden party.
Group founder member Pat Thompson described how her Birmingham- based club had been started by a nucleus of women who met each other through playgroups and nurseries, and who are now grandmothers. 'It was wonderful that we were chosen as the book group of the month just as we were about to celebrate our anniversary,' she added.'Our club has meant so much to us over the years - after all this time we know each other extremely well, and besides sharing our love of books together we have also helped each other through a variety of crises.' Mrs Thompson told how the 18-strong group, which meets in members'homes around the south of Birmingham, plans its reading programme six months ahead, with plenty of variety. And, indeed, the list of hundreds of novels, plays, biographies and poems they have tackled over the years makes extraordinary reading in itself. Not only does it include classics such as Dickens, Hardy and Tolstoy ('we'd probably never have bothered to read War And Peace by ourselves,' confessed Mrs Thompson), but also contemporary fiction such as Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife and Andrea Levy's Small Island, along with newspapers, magazines and even children's comics.'We still look forward to our meetings just as much as ever,' said Mrs Thompson.See the full content of this document
