Summary

FILM: THE TRAIN ROBBERS, 12.45pm, Ch4 JOHN WAYNE (pictured below) churned out virtually identikit westerns towards the end of his career, and this is one such -- Rod Taylor and Ben Johnson adding variety to a story about Mexican gold, a train robbery (unsurprisingly) and a double-dealing dame using Wayne as her plaything. In the era of Leone and Peckinpah, virtually nobody made westerns like this one -- a fact veteran writer-director Burt Kennedy realises instinctively, making Wayne and his Mount Rushmore iconic status the whole point of the exercise.

HEROES, 9pm, BBC2 YES, it's back. The show that divided the nation -- you either love it or you hate it -- returns for a second series. This first episode is set four months after the season one finale.
