Summary

TWENTY-ONE years and thousands of miles cannot separate Ian Ferguson from the special memory of his first Hampden triumph. Clad in St Mirrens pinstriped jersey, and topped with a shock bleached blond hair, his 20-year-old incarnation devastated Dundee United with the cool, extra-time finish that won the Scottish Cup Final 1987.

was the big bang that launched Ferguson into the public consciousness, before he became one of the games most voracious gatherers of medals over a 12-year love affair with Rangers. Yet, as Saints and United clash again in todays fifth-round meeting at Love Street, Ferguson is waiting for a similar spark to ignite second career in management. Australia has been his home in recent years, with coaching success found as assistant to fellow Scot Lawrie McKinna at Central Coast Mariners. The New South Wales club topped the A-League this season and remain in the running to lift the trophy when play-offs conclude with this months Grand Final. An application for Australian citizenship is likely to be made soon and, with his wife and three daughters, life is far from drab in the familys current base, where January temperatures regularly approach 30 degrees. Yet, despite those idyllic surroundings, the same drive that pushed Ferguson to become an Ibrox icon is now behind an increasing desire to prove he has the right credentials to step out on his own in management. Having narrowly missed the Dunfermline job last season, Ferguson remains keen for an opportunity to demonstrate his knowledge back on chillier home turf. If an opportunity came up, then I would seriously look at it, insisted Ferguson. I dont want to be a No2 all my life. Im ambitious and would like to be a manager in my own right, trying to be successful.
