IS THERE any better example of the Government's inability to control costs than the decision - the very day before the full horror of the deepening deficit was announced - to fill their pockets with increased expenses?
Nobody begrudges TDs the tools to do their job. But what they have created is a system that seems almost designed for abuse. Overnight allowances are EUR 145.32. Mileage comes in a staggering EUR 1.2673 per mile and those who choose to walk instead can keep the money with impunity. Nor should we forget two free phones, phone maintenance, several constituency grants each year, staff costs paid, and even EUR 44.81 a day to ensure they do not go hungry - though there seems little chance of that.See the full content of this document
