Summary

JUSTIFY this, Mr O'Donoghue. We now know that in addition to five- star hotels and endless use of the Government jet, the Ceann Comhairle has been billing the taxpayer for a chauffeur for Cheltenham. At E1,400 a day on his limousine alone, he was spending several times what most people earn each week on daily car hire. All while billing it to the taxpayer.

Remarkably, Fianna Fail ministers have even crept out of their holiday bunkers to defend political largesse more often associated with foreign autocrats. Dick Roche is utterly unapologetic about the top-of-the-line limousine hire, reserving his ire not for this flagrant abuse of public money but for those with the temerity to expose it. Perhaps we should expect no better from a man who has been sacked from Cabinet, left Galway without drinkable water for months, and then lost the Lisbon referendum before conspiring with foreign governments against his own electorate. But somebody in politics urgently needs to stand up and say that this is simply indefensible.
