Demise of Discipline ; Letters

Summary

IT MIGHT be right that Catterick Camp Army training instructors should be under investigation for cruelty (Mail), but given today's youth who don't want to be told anything, treat their elders with contempt and are quick to answer back, should we be surprised at the state of our Armed Forces? I don't wish to take anything away from our brave lads fighting across the world but in this age of political correctness and health 'n' safety, the might of our Armed Forces is degenerating day by day. I wonder if the Russians and Chinese teach their recruits the art of warfare with the same kid gloves.

In my first weeks' training, I was put on a charge for talking on the march. Up before the officer of the day, he noticed a button missing from my new overalls -- another charge: an hour's work in the galley and a tough hour on the parade ground with a rifle.
