The Atacama desert, which runs from the southern Peruvian border 600 miles down through northern Chile, is one of the most surreal places on the planet. With its amazing rock formations, gigantic sand dunes, colourful lava flows and blinding salt lakes, it's like walking through a painting by Salvador Dali.
