WHO would have thought that a player with as many Open wins outside St Andrews as Ben Curtis would be considered bigger than the Championship itself? Such is the ludicrous hype surrounding The Great One that, if you believe BBC Radio Five Live, the champion golfer won't be the champion golfer at all next Sunday because Tiger Woods isn't here.

Many commentators, including our own Des Kelly, have made the comparison with Roger Federer missing Wimbledon. Well, as they allegedly say in these parts, can we all calm down a little and reach for those old-fashioned tools called facts? Woods has played in nine Opens outside the Old Course and won precisely one. He has contended in one other and, er, that's about it.
