WE HAD no idea what we should find in Tasmania until we got there. Then, we argued about whether it resembled Scotland, New England, South Carolina, the Falklands or the highlands of Kenya.

We finally decided that parts of Australia's smallest state look like all those places, which is a reflection of its diversity.

Before arriving in Tasmania, we spent three days in Sydney, and enjoyed them chiefly because we stayed at the Park Hyatt, which is one of the most stunningly situated, as well as most comfortable, hotels in the world.
