I started my national service on November 20, 1947, and thought all the flags on public buildings must be for my benefit. Demobbed at Aldershot Barracks in 1949, our uniforms (mine with MELF flashes from my time in Egypt) were taken from us and we had to travel home in the ex-wartime civil defence uniform of dark blue tunic and trousers (mine were 6in too short because I couldn't find a man short enough to swop with).See the full content of this document
