TYPE 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition caused by a lack of insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the body and without it, the body can't make proper use of food eaten.

It develops when the body's natural defence system against viruses and bacteria starts to destroy the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. No one knows exactly what causes this to happen, according to the Diabetes Federation of Ireland.
