Summary
PRIME MINISTER Gordon Brown appeared on TV and Lord Mandelson on BBC radio, and both were questioned about the unofficial strike action at the Total refinery and other sites. Both avoided the main issue and blustered on about the free movement of labour within the EU. But the real issue is that a contractor, or subcontractor to Total, had arrived on the Humber with a boatload of 300 foreign workers, thus completely excluding local workers from the word go.
This is entirely different to the situation envisaged by the EU, where workers from other countries arrive in Britain of their own volition and apply for jobs in competition with local UK workers. Brown's and Mandelson's evasions were typical of the Government's approach to problems.See the full content of this document
